What motivated you to study abroad for a semester?
I've always wanted to spend an extended period of time abroad. I was particularly drawn to the idea of experiencing what it's like to live in another country. The Erasmus program gave me a great opportunity to do so, especially thanks to the financial support. I also found it interesting to experience university life in another country.
What was college like, and what classes did you take?
The university had a very beautiful campus with well-equipped studios for the creative programs and a good cafeteria. The staff, tutors, faculty, and fellow students at the university were always very friendly and helpful. You never felt alone or left in the lurch, and everyone was always very understanding. At the partner university, I mainly took graphic design courses such as illustration, advertising, and portfolio development. But I was also able to get a taste of other fields and took two game design courses, one of which was on board games.
In what ways were you able to gain new experiences and grow?
Spending a semester abroad definitely made me more independent and confident. I had the chance to discover many new places and meet new people, and to learn more about the culture and customs of another country. It also allowed me to explore new approaches and techniques for my studies and to work on real-world projects.
What was the absolute highlight, whether professional or cultural?
From a professional standpoint, my highlight was definitely the realistic and very hands-on work. It was a completely new experience for me.
Culturally, it was really interesting to learn about the rituals, customs, and holidays in Finland, and to be able to experience and celebrate some of them myself.
Above all, though, the highlight was getting to know so many nice people and experiencing a landscape I’d never seen before. During a short vacation, we had the opportunity to travel to Lapland, that was probably the biggest highlight.
What was the biggest challenge?
I’d say the biggest challenge was all the organization and the stress and uncertainty that came with it. The first two weeks, when everything is new and you have to settle in and make connections, were also a challenge. However, in my experience, this happens very quickly and almost on its own.
Your tips for future Outgoings?
My advice would definitely be not to stress too much and to enjoy the experience. Even if something seems a little too complicated at first, there's always help and guidance available.
