What is this study programme all about?
The focus of the study programme is on the preservation of art and cultural objects, which are to be preserved for future generations both in terms of their material qualities and their historical and cultural context.
During your studies, you will learn how to examine, document, classify and professionally protect objects from damage, and you will try out basic methods of conservation and restoration on original objects. Sound theoretical principles are combined with technical and practical skills. You will practise working in a team and presenting your results.
You will specialise your studies by choosing one of the following specialisations of conservation and restoration:
- Polychrome Wooden Objects and Paintings
- Furniture, Wooden Objects and Material Combinations
- Archive Material, Book and Graphic
- Stone Objects and Architectural Surfaces
Interested students can seek advice at any time and have an individual study plan drawn up.
What can I do with it later?
YA successful bachelor’s degree opens up a wide range of career opportunities. Depending on your chosen specialisation, the degree qualifies you to work in a supporting role in museums, monument preservation, private restoration workshops, or libraries and archives.
You will meet the requirements for admission to the consecutive Master’s programme in Conservation and Restoration Science, which also enables you to take on management roles and work on a self-employed basis.
What makes this study programme special?
- You will learn and get hands-on practice in small groups.
- You will work on original historical artefacts.
- The programme is supported by museums, monument preservation authorities, libraries and archives.
- If sufficient capacity is available, a second specialisation may be taken as an option. You will benefit from two fields of study that are unique in Germany: “Art History, Theory and History of Restoration” and “Microbiology in Restoration” are only offered in this form at Hildesheim.
